Outlander MPG Through the Years

From 2019 to 2022, there have been slight variations within the MPG estimates for the Mitsubishi Outlander. In 2021, the Mitsubishi Outlander was only available as a plug-in hybrid, which is why you won't see it in the chart below. However, the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid, of course, gets incredible MPGe numbers with its hybrid power and range. There was no pure gasoline version in this model year, so its fuel economy is a combination of actual fuel and electric range. The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV gets up to 74 MPGe or miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent.1

For 2022, Mitsubishi brought back the gasoline version, and its MPG numbers are as impressive as ever. For 2WD trims, it gets an EPA-estimated 24/31 City/Highway MPG.2 For S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) variants, they get an EPA-estimated 24/30 City/Highway MPG.2 You can check out the rest of the estimates for 2019-2022 models with our handy chart below!

FAQs

What kind of gas does the Mitsubishi Outlander require?

If you want to utilize those impressive fuel economy numbers, all you need to do is pull up to the closest gas pump, put your card in, and select "regular" because the Mitsubishi Outlander takes normal, everyday gasoline! If you really want to, you can put premium gasoline in it. However, it's unlikely to boost performance by any significant or noticeable degree. You can get everywhere you need to be with regular gas, plus you'll save a lot of money - especially since you won't have to stop to fill up your tank as much!

Does the Outlander or Outlander Sport have better fuel economy?

This all depends on which models and years you're trying to compare. Certain Mitsubishi Outlander Sport models do have higher MPG estimates than some Mitsubishi Outlander models. However, we'd say that, on the whole, the average fuel economy for the Mitsubishi Outlander is actually slightly higher than that of the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. For example, the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2WD models get a combined EPA-estimated fuel economy of 26 MPG.2 That number is greater than the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander MPG for AWD models but less than that of non-AWD 2020 models.

Why do AWD vehicles have a lower MPG rating?

AWD means all-wheel drive. As such, AWD vehicles send power to all four wheels, and this requires more energy consumption from all of your vehicle's components. This consumption means that gas is used up quicker than it would be on 2WD models because 2WD drivetrains are not as complex as those that send power to all of your wheels.
